Almost $3.7 million has been committed to construction of the project by the Queensland government as well as an additional $770,000 to acquire the land, according to Communities Minister Coralee O'Rourke who added:
“In the current economic climate we know how important it is to provide jobs for local people and I look forward to working with local construction companies to deliver this vital project for the people of Kallangur.”
It is expected that about 10 jobs will be created as part of the project. To be constructed in Marsden Road, the new community centre will provide many services for the local community including children and families.
In addition to services including parenting programmes, social activities and playgroups, the centre will operate as a crisis service entry point for everything from financial counselling to family and domestic violence assistance. The Queensland government currently has a 124-strong network of neighbourhood centres state-wide. Neighbourhood centres in Bowen, Wilsonton, Thursday Island, Murgon, Moranbah and Inala have also been planned or built since 2018.
April 20 is the closing date for Expressions of Interest from local building contractors for the construction of the Kallangur Community Centre.
