New chapter opens as work on Uni building begins

Construction work has begun on the University of the Sunshine Coast’s foundation building at Petrie, near North Lakes.

The USC Moreton Bay foundation three-storey building, which represents the first stage of the project, will include multi-purpose rooms, a large lecture theatre and an open auditorium ideal for staging community events.

The features, which were outlined in a graphic design of the development, are aimed at catering for a quick growth in student population that is expected to occur during its first three years of operation.

State Manager of Hansen Yuncken Queensland, Greg Baumann said the company had delivered many iconic school and tertiary buildings. They include the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, Coomera Indoor Sports Centre, James Cook University’s The Cairns Institute and QUT’s Education Precinct Building.

Professor Greg Hill, USC Vice-Chancellor, said the new campus taking shape will be a real game-changer for residents who will have unprecedented access to education at the tertiary level. He added:

“Moreton Bay is one of Queensland’s fastest growing regions, but has been the only region of its size in Australia without its own full-service university campus.”

It is expected the new facilities will be operational by semester one in 2020 with the first student enrolments predicted to be around 1,200. Each will be able to select from up to 50 study programmes with computer science, education and business among them.
