Multimillion sports complex upgrade targets aspiring AFL players

The next generation of Australian Rules football players from North Lakes in Queensland and throughout the Moreton Bay district could soon be spending part of their early training and playing years at a new-look South Pine Sports complex.

Moreton Bay Regional Council recently awarded the construction of a new $3.4 million two-storey clubhouse to a successful tenderer.

The move, according to Deputy Mayor Mike Charlton, represents a significant milestone in a 30-year plan for the complex, which includes the establishment of a new base in the Pine Rivers area for local AFL footy.

He said January 2016 marked the completion of the first step in the AFL upgrade, with the laying of the turf and installation of goalposts on the senior oval.

The new shared clubhouse will include 900sqm of floor area over two levels and feature a fully equipped gym, changing rooms for both home and away teams, a commercial kitchen, and rooms and offices for officials and coaches to organise everything from training schedules to the arrangement of printing services.

Cr. Charlton said AFL football code was among the fastest growing in the district, with a 15% rise in the participation rate last season alone.

Weather permitting, the deputy mayor said the shared clubhouse was due to be completed by the beginning of the 2017 AFL season.
