Local man starts new sporting competition for seniors

Alan Templeton, 63, has brought walking football to Brisbane with a new competition to be held at the iPlaySports centre in North Lakes.

Walking football was devised internationally in 2011 and is designed for seniors and people with disabilities who love playing football but are unable to keep up with the physical demands of the game. Since being featured in a Sky Sports documentary in 2017, the game has become something of a craze among the senior set.

Templeton has been a long-time lover of football, playing for many years and also coaching kids community football teams. An injury when he was 55 – he tore his calf muscles – made him realise it was time to step away from the game he loved.

Recovered now, he has missed playing the game and when he caught wind of the new walking football craze, he knew he had a solution to his problem. Walking football is, as the name suggests, a slowed down version of the game with modified rules including no physical contact and no running.

With health benefits including stress-reduction, increased fitness, and mental health benefits, the game also offers a social benefit. Templeton explained:

β€œThe best [thing] is the self-esteem and confidence you get instead of sitting at home feeling sorry for yourself.”

Those who promote new sports often arrange poster and flyer printing to increase awareness. More information about the sport can also be found on the Walking Football Brisbane website.
