A central sporting fixture used by residents from throughout the Moreton Bay Shire, including North Lakes, is to receive a major upgrade.

An amount of $4m has been allocated by the Commonwealth Government towards the redevelopment of the popular Redcliffe Dolphins Stadium.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott hailed the allocation as an investment in the local community, growth and jobs.

He said the upgrade at what is already the Redcliffe Peninsula’s biggest employment precinct would generate many more jobs in construction, maintenance, cleaning, marketing and hospitality.

The greater community will also likely benefit from a boost in demand for trades and services, such as catering and flyer printing associated with the stadium, which will be upgraded to seat up to 10,000 people.

The Prime Minister said the venue, which already hosts games and training programmes for soccer, hockey and rugby teams, will also be provided with a recreational area for junior player and school camps, plus upgraded change rooms and covered seating.

Abbott added that the redevelopment project was just the start of a long-term plan to establish a precinct in the northern regions of Brisbane, where trade shows and concerts could also be held.

Luke Howarth, Federal Member for Petrie, said the Redcliffe Dolphins Stadium upgrade was a great step forward in boosting small business, creating jobs, and growing tourism in the region.
