Students from North Lakes, Queensland and throughout the Moreton Bay area may have a future in poster printing following their exceptional efforts in the annual Lions Children Fire Poster Contest.
As in previous years, the 2015 competition required the preparation of a fire safety poster and was open to Year 4 students.
The aim of the contest, which was held in conjunction with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, was to promote safety with fire in the home.
The winning entry was submitted by Undurba State School student Monique Frederiksen, who was named overall State winner.
North Coast Schools’ area runner-up was Kasie-Lee Boon from Undurba State School, which was also represented by Zoe Carr and Lachlan Ozdowski.
According to President of Kallangur Lions Andy Opanowycz, the poster competition was first introduced in 1976 by the Lions Club of Golden Valley Keperra. The aim was to educate children about fire safety.
The initiative is now held by Lions clubs throughout the state and representatives from each club are responsible for coordinating participation by Grade 4 students in their local schools.
Talks by local Fire Brigade members are also arranged for school students.
The theme changes each year, with students creating individual artwork designed around what they have learnt from the fire officers’ presentations.
