Sports field multimillion dollar upgrade officially opened
A synthetic all-weather sports field has been opened for the benefit of Randwick City residents.
Recently unveiled by Mayor Noel D’Souza, the state-of-the-art field at Maroubra’s Heffron Park has been designed to cater for popular sports, including rugby league, rugby union and football.
According to the Mayor, the venue will also be able to accommodate one large or eight mini fields accredited by soccer governing body FIFA.
He said the new multimillion dollar improvements to the grounds were made possible through the Heffron Park Management Plan devised in 2004, which has seen a series of upgrades at the venue for the benefit of the entire community.
The Mayor unveiled the new-look field at the official opening held on April 3, at which residents, families and friends enjoyed music, giveaways and free activities. There was also an all-ages clinic for soccer enthusiasts.
Flyers advertising the event helped attract a good crowd at the event, which Mayor D’Souza said was part of Council’s commitment to provide top-quality facilities throughout the area.
He said that since 2008 the area had welcomed the Des Renford Leisure Centre, the popular Pedal Park, a new children’s playground, cycle way extensions and new floodlights.
The Heffron Park upgrade, he added, has seen it transform into one of the leading sports facilities in Sydney, further enhancing the 44-hectare venue. It also hosts a wide range of other sports including gymnastics, tennis, cycling, netball, cricket, Oz tag, touch football and soccer.
