Randwick to enjoy film noir

A classic crime film from the 1940s is being screened at a cinema in Randwick this winter as part of a special series of matinee shows.

Local cinephiles searching for a retro experience can catch an afternoon screening of “The Maltese Falcon”. The 1941 classic from the golden age of Hollywood stars Humphrey Bogart as private investigator Sam Spade, while Mary Astor plays Brigid O'Shaughnessy, the enigmatic femme fatale.

Character actors Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre (who also performed alongside Bogart in Casablanca) complete the cast as the villains.

Theatres screening vintage films sometimes work with specialist poster printing services that can produce engaging one-sheets with a retro look and feel.

The Maltese Falcon was the directorial debut of the famous American filmmaker John Houston, who also wrote the screenplay. The story is based on the detective novel by Dashiell Hammett and involves several individuals trying to track down a priceless statuette of a falcon encrusted in jewels, using betrayal and deceit to acquire it.

The matinee shows of the Maltese Falcon will take place on the big screen of the Ritz Cinemas on Saturday, June 13 and Monday, June 15. Screenings will take place at 2 pm and the cinema is sited at 45 St Pauls Street in Randwick.

The film is rated PG and has a 100-minute running time.
