Sports centre one step closer to reality

The people, culture and landscape of Randwick City has been said to have been a valuable inspiration in the planning of the new multi-purpose community sports facility, the Heffron Centre.

Plans for the major facility, funded by South Sydney Rabbitohs, Federal and State governments and Randwick City Council, were recently released for public exhibition, and feature the work of Co-op Studio.

The new indoor Heffron Centre will include a number of sports halls for a wide variety of community activities, incorporating everything from basketball, volleyball and badminton to netball and futsal, as well as a dedicated facility for gymnastics. In addition, the plans feature a plaza and cafe.

The design aspects also maximise ventilation and natural light, include solar panels on the rooftop, stormwater and rainwater collection, parking facilities for bicycles and charging facilities to meet expected demand for electric vehicles now and in the future.

A graphic design of projects such as this have often also been included in plans to help people visually appreciate the planned development.

Mayor of Randwick Danny Said described the new centre as an important investment in the community's health, and one which will be adaptable to meet changing needs while also being energy and water efficient. He added:

“This project will transform this part of Heffron Park into an active and vibrant place for the entire community.”

Subject to approval, work on the development is expected to begin in mid-2021 for an anticipated opening at the end of the following year.
