Council first asked for public feedback late in 2019 when, during a two month period, it urged people to have a say on how the Meeks Street Plaza could be improved to create a welcoming and vibrant place for locals to congregate, celebrate and meet.
A Council spokesperson said the public shared ideas, completed a council survey and conversed with representatives while at the plaza. An ideas board and online survey, as well as discussions with local passers-by were also conducted.
Results of the feedback revealed six things that people were keen to see featured in the design. These were trees and plantings, seating areas, local markets, outdoor dining, space for local performers and shade. The spokesperson said that taking into account results of the public feedback, the latest draft concept design was undertaken, and he added:
"As a result, we have created a concept plan that focuses on greening the plaza, extending available space to provide more outdoor seating and dining, a new performance stage & lawn area for local events and group gatherings."
Vehicular access to rights of way and driveways has been retained. Often a graphic design is prepared of planned upgrades such as this to provide clarity.
The latest consultation period will end on May 5.
