Whilst discussion of a public vote is not a new subject, the raising of this motion was in response to Labor leader Bill Shorten’s pledge that if Labor is elected they will provide funding for plebiscites to be carried out by 35 NSW Councils in line for amalgamation.
Randwick Council’s recent ‘Fit for the Future’ community consultation project, which included Brochures being sent to nearly 70,000 residents and Signs at bus stops around the local area, aimed to get an indication of resident’s feelings and provide more detailed information about the potential amalgamation.
Labor Councillor Tony Bowen, who raised the motion for the poll to be carried out, said:
“I am delighted to be able to hand this decision to the people of Randwick who are the owners of our local democracy. The community wants and needs to have a voice on forced mergers.”
The vote is not confirmed yet however, as three other Councillors responded with a rescission motion and the subject will be debated at the next council committee meeting which falls ten days after the election on the 12th July.
