New station mooted for Randwick

The light railway station at Randwick would be located in the High Street under new proposals put forward by the City Council.

The original plan was to situate the station at High Cross Park, but local authorities have put together a new suggestion in a bid to spare the park’s war memorial, a number of trees and parking spaces on nearby streets.

The council has submitted its idea to Transport for NSW in the hope it will be considered as a viable alternative. Currently, plans have been approved to build the line up to an interchange at High Cross Park, but Randwick City Mayor Ted Seng said the council’s proposal would save money and make access easier. He commented:

"The High Street alternative provides a solution that is better integrated with the Randwick Junction town centre. The terminus and bus drop off and pick up zones allow users to take advantage of the shopping facilities and the improved public spaces while waiting or moving between the bus and tram.”

Whatever the outcome, printing services could be used to update residents on the progress of the light rail line and its accompanying stations through the delivery of special newsletters or information boards at the site.

Work on the light rail system is due to begin later this year and is scheduled for completion in 2019.
