New skate park pipes up in Randwick

Skateboard enthusiasts from Randwick and surrounding areas have welcomed the introduction of a skate park as part of an upgrade at Chifley Sports Reserve.

Professional skaters and community consultation contributed to the construction and design of the skate park, which was officially opened last month by Randwick Mayor Noel D’Souza.

The official launch included skate demonstrations, plenty of food and free activities, while the new skate park attracted trial runs on bikes, scooters and skateboards.

Mayor D’Souza said high-quality facilities such as the new skate park were a good investment in the future for local youth and families.

He said young people used facilities such as skate parks not only to hone their skateboarding skills, but also as a great place to socialise and meet people. In addition, this represents a healthy recreational activity for young adults and children.

Skateboarding is a popular activity often featured on Holiday Cards, Postcards and poster printing around the world. According to the Mayor, the new skate park has provided locals with an excellent facility to build on their skills.

Mayor D’Souza said the skate park was just the beginning, as construction is set to begin in 2016 on Randwick’s first all-abilities playground catering for the needs of kids with disabilities specifically.

Two amenities buildings are also currently under construction at Chifley Sports Reserve.
