New partnership to bring rugby league players to Randwick

Sports fans from Randwick have something to celebrate with the announcement of a new initiative between the Randwick City Council and the Sydney Roosters.

The new partnership, created with the National Rugby League team, is designed to develop closer links with the city, boost morale among young people, and encourage youngsters to play the sport.

The council has already developed a successful partnership with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the other team that falls within Randwick City according to the NRL boundaries, and hopes to replicate that success with the Roosters.

The benefits the scheme will bring include free tickets to some Sydney Roosters games. Fans who manage to take advantage of these could use banner printing to show their support for Roosters players during the match.

Roosters players and coaches will also visit local schools and run an annual coaching clinic for keen players, as well as donating a signed jersey to be used for fundraising.

The Roosters’ chief operating officer, Brian Canavan said the club was looking forward to developing the new relationship. He said:

"We are proud of the role we play at the grassroots level of rugby league and in supporting local events and charities, with a number of these in and around Clovelly, Coogee and Randwick which fall within the boundaries of Randwick City Council.”

The partnership will begin next year.
