Randwick City Council has completed work on an outdoor gym at Coogee.
The free facility enables people to access exercise equipment while using the popular and well-used Coastal Walkway.
The gym in Neptune Park enjoys a corner location at Wolseley Road and Neptune Street. It is fully equipped with a wide array of exercise equipment for all ages.
To ensure the park is environmentally friendly and attractive to native insects and birds, the council is planting about 3,000 native, low-lying shrubs.
The park was created following a consultation with the community about what should be included in the design to encourage people to use it. Half of the respondents admitted the original park had nothing to entice them to visit it, and others highlighted a lack of shade and trees.
The idea to improve the park, including an outdoor gym, shrubs and trees, received 84 percent of support from residents taking part. The concept of introducing a native garden was also expected to add more interest to what was on offer. New public facilities such as the gym have often been promoted via flyer printing campaigns within the local area.
Construction of the gym began earlier this year and incorporates a range of equipment to suit all levels of fitness. The equipment includes a step-up station, sit-up bench, roman rings, pull-up bar, parallel bars, elliptical trainer, chest press, leg press and aerobic cycle.
