Major upgrade works begin at Coogee SLSC

Randwick City Council has partnered with the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club in a major refurbishment of the iconic venue.

The works were initiated by the Surf Club with the design elements of the substantial refurbishment followed by development consent obtained as early as March 2017. Details, which often include a graphic design of the project, were exhibited publicly in accordance with the development application process.

Proposed works included the building facade being overhauled, existing club facilities upgraded, the installation of new facilities for better access and an interior reconfiguration to create an impressive venue to host club activities and community events.

Council was successfully approached to assist last year after major funding was secured, including $2,580,000 as part of the Local Government's Stronger Communities Fund and a further $300,000 from the Responsible Gambling Office of the State's Industry Department.

As a result, Randwick Council is contributing $720,000 towards the overall project cost as well as management services to see the project reach completion, which is expected in November.

Although not being heritage-listed, the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club dates back to 1907. Its beachside setting, however, has exposed its vulnerability to general deterioration and storm damage over many years and just four years ago waves penetrated through the club's walls on the lower level.

It is anticipated the current works will help provide better protection for the venue in the future.
