Book readers from Randwick, New South Wales and surrounding areas are in for a big surprise when next they visit Maroubra’s Bowen Library.
The busiest of Randwick City’s libraries, with more than 350,000 visitors annually, is the focus of a major refurbishment programme.
A council spokesman said the work would transform the area into a modern and more effective and welcoming space of discovery, inspiration, and learning.
The library has been servicing the local community since 1991, and a community centre was added in 2004.
The combined facility features the Junction Neighbourhood and The Shack on the ground level next to the library, and level three hosts Learning Links.
Many regulars have used the library and its conveniently located foyer coffee shop as a meeting place before heading to the Vonnie Young Auditorium and main library on level one, according to the spokesman.
He said that when the refurbishment was completed, which is expected on February 12, the facility would offer even more attractions including a more contemporary design and colour pallet to complement modern lighting and furniture.
Printing services including digital copying will have its own centralised hub, while visitors will also be able to relax with a good book in a new lounging area complete with ceiling-suspended sculpture. Additional study rooms and study desks with integrated power points will also be introduced.
