Greek blues bound for Randwick

A special screening in Randwick will introduce Greek blues music to theatre goers in the area.

Randwick’s renowned venue, Ritz Cinemas is set to show a new documentary on the big screen about music and culture entitled “My Rembetika Blues”. Theatres and picture houses will sometimes use professional poster printing services to create attractive advertisements to display in their foyers and outside to encourage ticket sales.

Rembetika music, also referred to as the Greek blues and is a style of music that has origins both on the streets and in exile. The musical form is deeply rooted in the mass migration individuals in the early part of the 20th century. The upcoming documentary involves filmmaker M. Zournazi tracing her forbearers journey from Turkey’s Smyrna to Sydney in Australia. As the filmmaker uncovers her family history, she also explores how Rembetika music has connected people in times of crises and struggle. The film weaves together stories of migration and music to document unique and previously unheard experiences of those seeking a new life in another country.

The musical documentary My Rembetika Blues and a Q & A session with its director, M. Zournazi, will take place at Ritz Cinemas at 45 St Pauls Street in Randwick on Thursday, June 23. The event will begin at 6.30 pm and end at 8.15 pm.
