Expansion plans revealed for historical cinema in Randwick

The Ritz cinema in Randwick changed hands at the end of March and will be undergoing some major improvements aimed at enticing more cinema lovers to go to the movies.

The new owners, Eddie and Lindy Tamir already own three cinemas in Melbourne.

The quintessential, art-deco style cinema began its life in 1937 as a humble single-screen cinema. Run by Antionette Katos for the past 22 years, three screens were added in 1997 and an additional two more in 2001.

Tamir intends to build three more screens including an open-air movie area which would operate over the warmer months of the year.

While the cinema industry has lost some popularity due to online streaming services, Tamir believes that going to the movies will still be viable well into the future. He hopes to blend the historical feel of the building with modern technology to create a 21st century cinema experience.

As well as conventional and box-office movies, Tamir wants to screen more variety of films including documentaries, 35mm retro films and low-budget Australian movies.

The Ritz cinema will offer food and beverages with a bar available to patrons and is hoping for strong support from the community of film lovers. Print shops will be able to assist marketing for venues such as this, providing flyer and poster printing services.

The Ritz cinema is located in 43 Pauls Street, Randwick.
