Accessibility improvements flagged for Randwick Council streets

The heritage areas that make up most of the City of Randwick are to correct their longstanding problem of footpaths, which are not wheelchair accessible.

The upgrade will reach each footpath in the municipality following successful lobbying by local councillor Brendan Roberts. He said the change makes sense after the recent completion of a program to ensure there were footpaths on every side of the street. Cr Roberts told the Daily Telegraph:

‘Now that we’ve achieved that goal I thought there was capacity to have a new goal to put a kerb ramp on every corner by 2020.’

The City of Randwick takes in several popular and renowned beaches, including Coogee, as well as a world-famous horse racing track. Terrain along Sydney’s Pacific coastline is mostly uneven while the city’s older suburbs, which date back to the 18th century, feature many areas which were planned well before the days of consideration for wheelchair access or parents pushing a pram.

Passage of the proposed by-law through the council was not completely smooth, however. Some councillors called for a rescission motion to be heard at last week’s meeting but eventually scrapped their disagreement. Cr Roberts added:

‘I’m thankful to those councillors who changed their mind.’

Improvements to council amenities are often highlighted with the assistance of brochure printing services.
