Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, praised the recent Sydney Rides Business Challenge, which he said highlighted the many benefits of riding for small and large businesses.
The humble art of riding a bicycle has put cyclists from Alexandria and throughout the City of Sydney on top of the world. A total of 4,465 workers representing 359 businesses won in the challenge amid an international field that included London and Auckland, sealing the ride’s claim to be the world’s most successful rides challenge.
He said the importance of active transport in the city has been acknowledged and embraced by the city’s businesses, with increasing numbers of people taking part in the event each year.
Riding to work was a worthwhile activity that modern companies were supporting around the world, especially with the provision of top-quality cycling infrastructure, according to the Lord Mayor.
He claimed walking or riding to work also generated increased productivity on the job, as well as helping to ease chronic traffic congestion, which costing residents and businesses $5bn annually.
Event Catalogues during the past 14 years have listed various categories for the four-week challenge, ranging from a handful of employees, to more than 500.
Jacqui Fetchet of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), which won this year’s 500-plus employees section, said the cycle challenge had brought together many of the organisation’s colleagues who united to achieve positive results for health and the environment.
