Described as among Sydney's most significant changes in two decades, the proposal would likely guide development in a rapidly expanding area in the city's south, according to Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore. She added:
“South Sydney is an amazing part of our city, rich with Indigenous and industrial histories – we are introducing new planning controls to ensure the area reaches its potential and thrives into the future.”
The Mayor said the changes proposed would provide creative space, opportunities for employment and affordable housing, in addition to driving commercial floor space investment.
Moore said 15,000 jobs would be created across many industries, while the public domain will also be improved to improve access and walkability to Waterloo Metro Station and other important transport hubs in the local area.
The precinct in North Alexandria spreads across 36 hectares, while the precinct in Botany Road is 21.3 hectares in area.
The Lord Mayor said that consultations with local Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal communities were undertaken early in the development of the proposal in recognition of the district's rich industrial and Indigenous histories.
Public exhibition of both the North Alexandria and Botany Road precinct proposals is expected to take place later this year. Such proposals often include a detailed graphic design.
