Rarely seen cars on show in Sydney

Auto enthusiasts from Alexandria are in for a treat with a new exhibition of classic vehicles at The Powerhouse Museum.

The display, called Recollect: Cars Auto Obsession, is the first time that the museum’s collection of cars has been on show to the public in this way.

The exhibition is part of the institution’s initiative to make more of its collections accessible to the public, and includes more than 25 cars.

Among the exhibits are a 1959 Goggomobil Dart made in Sydney by Bill Buckle, and one of only three remaining Sheffield Simplex tourers.

Other vehicles include a Blue Label Bentley from the 1920s, and the Rolls Royce Phantom used by the New South Wales Governor Sir Roden Cutler from 1966 to 1981. His modified car is complete with gold-plated crowns and a police radio that the driver could use to ensure green traffic lights along the route.

Many of the cars have never been restored, allowing visitors to see them much as they would have been when they were last used.

Children and the young at heart will also enjoy the collection of 600 Matchbox toy cars that will also be on show.

After browsing the exhibition, visitors might like to browse the museum gift shop, where services such as postcard printing have been called upon to create stylish souvenirs.

The exhibition is open now and runs until Sunday, October 26th.
