New museum to showcase Chinese culture and history

Residents of Alexandria are in a prime position to visit a new museum that will focus on Chinese people and their history in Australia.

The MOCA (Museum of Chinese in Australia) is to include a museum space and cultural centre dedicated to the promotion, preservation and discovery of Chinese people who have come to Australia at various times throughout the nation's history.

Set to be a major Sydney attraction, the museum will be located at 744 George Street and will replace the Haymarket library, which has been moved to Darling Square. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the community would benefit greatly from the establishment of the new museum and added:

“Haymarket is the home of our city’s oldest and largest Chinatown, so it’s fitting that this is where we will create a centre for the preservation of our Chinese history."

The venue will feature an exhibition space and gallery, spaces for community events and meetings, programming activities, a shop and cafe. It will also host a programme of rotating exhibitions together with educational experiences.

The Mayor added that MOCA will perform an important role in helping to share the values, culture and past of Australia's Chinese community.

Exhibitions and other works showcased by facilities such as this often use brochure printing services to offer detailed information to visitors.

The expression of interest to repurpose the three-storey Haymarket library's sandstone building into the Museum of Chinese in Australia was selected from a field of 13 applications.
