Kids learn not to waste food

Oz Harvest is leading the way in food rescue around the country by picking up surplus food from commercial premises and delivering directly to charities supporting people in need.

Founded in 2004, the Sydney-based organisation has its head office in Alexandria and as part of its educational program this year, it will be running a series of Kids in the Kitchen classes for children aged 6-14.

The day will be a combination of practical and creative cooking ideas as well as teaching the children how to use healthy ingredients, all while educating them on how to avoid food wastage.

Under the guidance of professional chefs and volunteers, the children will cook morning and afternoon teas, lunch and extra food for people in need. Meal labels will be used, which the children can use to hand-write messages on with the meals being sent out to vulnerable people in the community. Labels and other Stationery can be provided by local printing services.

Proceeds will help Oz Harvest to continue delivering food to those in need of it and fund further educational programs.

The classes will be run over 2019 with Term One sessions being held for children aged 6-9 on Thursday April 18th with ages 10-14 on April 23rd. Sessions begin at 8:45am and go until 3pm and are held at Oz Harvest headquarters, in Alexandria.
