Industrial history to be preserved in Alexandria

An Alexandria cafe has been used as a great example of how to repurpose industrial buildings, as the City of Sydney council looks to preserve the history of other parts of the city.

The Grounds of Alexandria is housed in a 1920s industrial precinct, and Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the location added to its attraction. She said:

“The look and feel of the former industrial site creates a unique setting for the eatery and an authentic experience for customers, adding to the attraction for their hundreds of visitors each week.”

Now the council is planning to add a number of other sites to the heritage list to ensure they are preserved for the future.

The listing still allows for the buildings to be renovated or repurposed but it means the renovation must be sensitive, and heritage elements must be retained.

Owners could also ask a printing company to create high-quality Copies of original photos of the site or documents, such as old newspaper cuttings, to include as part of the interior decor when they refurbish them to tell the building’s story.

Among the sites proposed for listing in Alexandria are the old National Motors Igloo site, which once manufactured Beaufort Bombers during the Second World War, along with the former HG Whittle and Sons factory and the old Alexandria Spinning Mills. The full list is available on the City of Sydney Council website.
