Green Square records major milestone in Citys history

The City of Sydney has announced that work on its $2bn town centre at Green Square has included construction of the city’s first main street in more than 100 years.

The creation of Ebsworth Street marks the centre point of the new Green Square Town Centre, which will incorporate 14 hectares of retail and dining outlets as well as 8,000 workers and 6,800 residents.

The major urban renewal project is located 4 km from Sydney CBD on a site that extends across the suburbs of Beaconsfield, Waterloo, Zetland and Alexandria, New South Wales.

City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said there was much to look forward to within the new development, including a lively atmosphere, wide pavements, calm traffic and great outdoor dining venues in Ebsworth Street.

He said, however, that sections of the new Ebsworth Street would soon be temporarily covered by a layer of industrial fabric, sand and thick concrete to allow for work to begin on the construction of apartments and new shops without damaging the new main street.

He stated that this process will enable heavy machinery and trucks associated with the construction of apartments to move freely within the area without damage to services, roadways and footpaths.

The Town Centre site was formerly the centre of a thriving manufacturing industry at which business card printing reflected a range of interests, from aeroplanes to brick production.
