A new activation programme for precincts across Sydney, including Alexandria, has been developed to help revitalise its many villages and ignite new micro-precincts.
The programme is being funded through a grants program worth $4 million, and it is aimed at providing funds for creatives and businesses to help with the activation processes.
A collaborative partnership is encouraged to activate public places, businesses and vacant commercial and retail spaces through cultural events. The programme will support the outdoor projects it covers by waiving fees for services such as venue hire, power access and more until the end of June 2023.
Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore said the grants are available to sole traders, not-for-profits and for-profits, and that projects must be held between 1 July this year and 30 June next year. Events held throughout the city have often been advertised via flyer or brochure printing campaigns to help attract good attendances.
The Lord Mayor said the council was focusing on supporting the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, along with investing in activations and events. She added:
“It’s an exciting program because rather than just creating one-off events, we’re hopeful new hotspots will emerge. Businesses and event producers will build relationships, work together and establish new and unique offerings that become part of their area’s DNA.”
A number of grants are currently available, including environment, business, cultural and community, and the city is calling for people to apply. Applications for the Precinct Activation Programme must be received by 5pm on 11 April.
