Community shed to focus on electronics repairs

The repair and reuse of household electronics is the main focus of a newly opened community hub in Green Square, near Alexandria.

Believed to be the first of its kind in Australia, the Banga Community Shed, run by the City of Sydney, provides an area for people to share skills, learn and meet.

Currently, the shed hosts an electronics skills workshop together with a testing and tagging service as well as a repair café held weekly. A tool library is also housed in the shed. Organisations offering opportunities for the community to learn new skills often turn to flyer printing services to provide the relevant information.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore, who officially opened the Banga Community Shed within the Joynton Avenue cultural precinct, said the new venue will be fantastic for residents who like to create, tinker and learn new skills, adding:

“Banga means ‘make’ or ‘do’ in Gadigal language, a perfect name for a building that will host workshops for people to learn new skills to repair and reuse electronic items that may otherwise go to landfill.

He said that to his knowledge, Banga was Australia’s only dedicated hub to focus on the repair and reuse of electronics.

Many services and activities will be provided at Banga with the list including preloved electronic items drop-off point, paid repair service plus a tool library, tagging and testing, a repair café and skills workshop all aimed at electronic items.
