City focuses on boosting affordable housing

A City of Sydney council-owned site in Bourke Road, Alexandria is set to host a new development aimed at housing families from low-income households.

Currently unused, the 803-square metre site is currently the focus of sale negotiations with Bridge Housing, a provider of community housing.

The provision of affordable rental homes is considered an important factor within the social infrastructure, according to Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore, who added:

“Increasing the amount of affordable rental housing available for lower income households is an urgent priority for the City. We need to act now, to support our community now and into the future.”

The Alexandria site, the mayor said, was ideal because it was in a great location close to facilities such as transport, services, jobs, parks and local businesses, ranging from retail outlets to Print shops.

The provision of affordable housing across the city was the focus of the council's 2020 Housing for All strategy, which has been initiated to cover the next 20 years.

Moore said affordable rental homes totalled more than 1,070, and there are another 629 units in the pipeline. She added that in 2020, 99 units under the affordable housing classification were opened in Glebe, and 160 more homes were being constructed in Redfern.

Targets set within the 2020 strategy include increasing private dwellings in the city by 37,000 between now and 2036, 10,500 of which will be affordable rental homes.
