Port Milwaukee records rise in volume

Port Milwaukee, a major port that serves the Milwaukee area including Greenfield, has just posted its highest cargo volume in seven years.

The port was able to overcome a number of challenges to achieve this, including flooding problems and restrictions brought on by the pandemic. The overall tonnage passing through the municipal port and the private docks nearby rose by 5%, with agricultural exports and cement handling leading this growth.

Adam Tindal-Schlicht, the Port Director, put out a statement where he put the success down to the port’s resilience, citing the pandemic and high water levels as two big challenges that were overcome during 2020.

The tonnage passing through the municipal facilities located on Jones Island was up by just over 1% when compared to the numbers from 2019. That was enough to take 2020’s volume just above Port Milwaukee’s five-year and ten-year average. The grain being shipped out and the construction material that boosted the year’s tonnage was primarily handled by private docks. The tonnage passing through private docks is up by 37%. Poster printing is a common feature on work sites such as docks.

The port can expect to see even more activity in the coming years, because Viking revealed that it will be using Port Milwaukee as one of the major destinations in its cruises from 2022.
