The Milwaukee Department of Public Works has just put out a report that shows the results and implications of a pilot study on using dockless scooters to travel through the city.
The pilot began in July 2019 and ended in December 2019. The goals was to see how effective the scooters were and to get feedback. If the pilot study shows positive results, scooters could become a regular feature in nearby cities such as Greenfield.
The three scooter companies involved were Spin, Lime, and Bird. They expect that their services will help ease transport congestion in the city. The pilot was started after Bird was forced to remove its scooters in 2018. A bill was signed that made scooters legal in 2019, although only if they were a part of the study. The first stage of the pilot study showed that 2,762 scooter rides were taken per day. Out of a total of 350,130 rides, 67 resulted in crashes reported by the operators
A slight majority of 42.8% of people asked were in favor of using the scooters, compared to 41.6% against them. Those in favor like the convenience, while those against brought up safety issues such as riding on sidewalks. The next stage of the pilot study will start in Spring 2021.
