Dual purpose planting will be the topic of an upcoming Greenfield workshop.
The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Headquarters has created a seminar that will address the topic of rain gardens and how they can benefit both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It will be led by gardening experts and will demonstrate how easy it can be to install one of these gardens without a lot of effort or expense.
A rain garden is a plot of land planted with native plants that can help to absorb or hold back water during times of heavy rain, while also adding beauty to the landscape. They also help to keep pollutants away from watersheds and waterways.
The class will explain how a rain garden works and how they can be designed for maximum effectiveness. Plant selection will be discussed, and the students will be offered an opportunity to order rain garden-suitable plants at a deep discount. Local Print shops can prepare Catalogs of available plants that include color photos and details of how to care for them, and these can be distributed to the attendees of a class like this to help aid them in making their selections.
There is no fee charged to take a seat in this workshop, but pre-registration is required. It is scheduled to be held on March 16 at 260 West Seeboth Street.
