Greenfield area residents stroll down candy cane lane

People in the Greenfield, Wisconsin area have more than Holiday Cards and presents under the tree to give them cheer this holiday season. Four square blocks have been turned into an electric winter wonderland, lighting up the night and supporting a good cause at the same time.

The area is called Candy Cane Lane, and it is marked out with Signs and Banners, as well as gift wrapping surrounding the trunks of the trees that line the streets. Anyone looking to take a tour of Christmas decorations will find a paradise of twinkling lights, with over 300 homes participating in decking their houses, lawns, and trees with festive decor. The event lasts for weeks, and features different guest appearances every night, such as local team mascots, firefighters, and even the Sheriff's Department.

The local holiday event asks visitors to donate a little bit of money in support of the Midwest Athletes against Childhood Cancer (MACC) fund. In fact, the Candy Cane Lane was started in 1984 as a way of fundraising for this nonprofit when one local neighbor’s child was diagnosed with cancer. Over the years, the organization has raised over $1.6m, and has a goal this year of coming up with $100,000.

Candy Cane Lane can be found in West Allis between 92nd and 96th St., and from Montana to Oregon Ave, and will end on December 27. Donations to the MACC fund can be made in person or through North Shore Bank. Anyone interested in more information should visit the website.
