Greenfield area invited to celebrate St. Paddys Parade
This March, locals from Greenfield should note that neighboring Milwaukee will hold its 57th Shamrock Club of Wisconsin St. Patrick's Day Parade to celebrate Irish American heritage and community spirit.
The parade has a long history, having been first held in 1843 before Wisconsin even became a state. It holds the title of being the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be held outside of the original 13 colonies. The Temperance Movement and the Repeal Movement were two important Irish movements that influenced the original parade. In modern times, with the Shamrock Club at the helm, the parade showcases Irish American culture and heritage and celebrates the community spirit of downtown.
The parade will feature over 100 units of celebration, such as elaborate floats, marching bands and bagpipers, Irish dancers, and local celebrities. The ShamROCK Kick-off Party will be held the day before, which will be a free event that offers Irish entertainment, beverage specials from sponsoring businesses, and raffle prizes.
Parades like this often boast colorful banners that can be displayed in floats along the parade route. Organizers may choose to visit local shops offering banner printing services to prepare these materials.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 15 beginning at noon. It will start at North Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and West Wisconsin Avenue, and finish at Water & Highland.
