68th Street Bridge to remain closed for at least nine months

Drivers in the Greenfield area will have to find alternative routes after receiving news that the 68th Street Bridge will be closed for the next few months while city officials rebuild it.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation closed the bridge down on October 28. City officials expect it to be closed at least until August 2020 while the entire bridge is rebuilt. Such information is often shared in letters and Flyers that feature official Letterheads.

The bridge goes over the I-894 and it was opened up to the public in 1966. The condition of the bridge has been deteriorating steadily to the point where city officials decided that the entire bridge must be replaced. The bridge got a new concrete deck overlay back in 1989, but that has not been enough to keep it standing.

Before making the decision to rebuild the bridge, transportation officials rated the existing structure on a nine-point scale and gave it a four. This means that the bridge is experiencing advanced section loss, scour, spalling, and deterioration.

No traffic will be allowed over the bridge while construction is ongoing. Businesses and residences located along 68th Street will still be accessible. Detours will be set up so that drivers can use W. Layton Avenue, W. Cold Spring Road, Forest Home Avenue, and S. 78th Street.

Some lanes on the I-894 will occasionally be closed at night.
