Trail extensions almost done, with links to other cities coming soon

In a few months, nearly two decades of planning will come to fruition when the city of Richardson fulfills its agreement to provide the regional trail system with key connection points.

The cities of Richardson, Allen, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, and Garland entered into the Six Cities Trail Plan in 2001, which involved creating a primary trail spine to connect the cities. Richardson’s contributions were an addition to its Breckinridge Park trail system and an extension of its Duck Creek Trail System.

The construction of 1.2 miles of trail is expected to be completed in August and will connect with trails in Plano from the north or west side of the Breckinridge Park trail system. A new picnic table, drinking fountain and bench will be included at the new trailhead. The cost of the soon-to-be-completed Breckinridge Park project will be $780,000.

Trail maps are among the many items that may be ordered from Print shops; they can be upgraded to more of a brochure with the addition of color photos of interesting sites along the trails.

The Duck Creek Trail System is the site of a 1.5-mile extension project, which when completed will connect Richardson to Garland at the latter’s corner of Jupiter and Belt Line roads. It is expected to be completed by October at a cost of $3.1m. Plans are also being drawn up to eventually lengthen the Duck Creek Trail into Richardson.
