Superintendent discusses math instruction opportunities

The Richardson Independent School District’s (ISD) interim superintendent recently gave a presentation to outline how she will be working to bridge the academic gaps often found in mathematics.

Tabitha Branum put out a video presentation where she discussed the district’s procedures for instructing math. The video was one part of a series of presentations that will be put out every month, taking a closer look at how instruction is carried out in core curriculum subjects. Presentations like this are often complemented with handouts like promotional Pens and Notebooks.

During the presentation, Branum said that math is all about puzzles. She went on to say:

“You begin with a program you don’t understand. Then, using the skills from your tool box, higher-order thinking skills and teacher guidance, you slowly begin to see how all of the pieces fit together. That is the beauty of math."

The main goal of this series of presentations is to help the schools close the opportunity and academic gaps commonly found in math. One goal is targeting third grade math, which has been found to be a key metric in indicating whether the student is likely to go on to succeed academically.

One of the other goals concentrates on Algebra 1, as research shows that this is another key indicator to predict whether the student will graduate high school or not.
