Snow sports come to Richardson

A snowboarding and skiing school based in Colorado might soon relocate to a building next to the Arapaho Station of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

The school is called Shredder. At its meeting on October 5, the City Plan Commission in Richardson recommended that Shredder's special permit be approved. The company will be leasing a portion of a commercial building with multiple tenants located off the Central Expressway.

According to Derica Peters, the Senior Planner, officials from Shredder intend to erect two ramps in the 4,700 sq ft leased area, one measuring 6 feet high and the other 10 feet. Printing services could be used to promote the opening of a new facility.

Providing instruction for pupils aged 10 months to 10 years, the school will also have a facility for equipment and muscle training. The franchisee for what will be the Richardson, Robert Lacey, said that the school's programs are taught across 10 weeks and will utilize fake snow. Lacey told the commissioners that the school provides another option instead of ski resort training and went on to say:

“I thought this was so cool that you could teach your kids how to ski in a controlled environment here in Dallas, and then go up to the mountains and they can already go down the hill.”

The maximum occupancy for the ski ramps at any given time will be 15 students accompanied by three members of staff.
