Starting from the academic year 2023-24, officials of Richardson Independent School District (RISD) are planning to boost the total enrollment of the district by permitting more students to register from outside the RISD district.
During a recent work session, the board of trustees of RISD deliberated on the possibility of implementing an open-enrollment program. The proposed Open Enrollment Inter-District Transfer program would provide an opportunity for students who reside beyond the district's limits to apply for admission to a school within RISD. However, the board did not make any decision or take a vote on the proposed program.
According to Tabitha Branum, the Superintendent of RISD, district officials are likely to employ the open-enrollment program to mitigate the impact of a budgetary shortfall of $23.7m. As per the available data, RISD's schools have approximately 10,000 seats for elementary students that can be utilized. Printing services can be used to create enrollment Forms in these cases.
While at the meeting, Branum also spoke of a newly developing demographic in the area that is looking at the choices available in surrounding areas and questioning why the same options cannot be found here. She wants them to find options in the area without having to use private or charter schools.
Assuming the plan is sanctioned, the district would implement it in a restricted manner during the 2023-24 academic year. Further programs may be evaluated for 2024-25.
