Richardson to vote on slew of bond issues

Come November, five separate bond issues dealing primarily with infrastructure improvements, and costing a total of $190m, will be on the Richardson ballot.

Over 50% of the funding is to be used for street improvements, while approximately 33% will be earmarked for public buildings renovation. The remaining bond issues deal with planned work on drainage, sidewalks, and parks.

According to Deputy City Manager Don Magner, each bond issue is voted on individually. Even if all measures are approved, the city’s property tax rate would not go up. Magner explained:

“The funding that’s proposed in this bond program is largely due to existing debt being paid off and some anticipated growth in our property valuation.”

Since some ballot issues can be confusing, Print shops are often called upon to Print literature explaining them to voters.

Two of the buildings to receive improvements are the Richardson Public Library and City Hall, which require combinations of electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning work. Also, some rearranging of the library’s bathrooms and staircases to open more space will be included in that proposed bond issue.

Residential sidewalks will be repaired or replaced in the southwest and northeast quadrants of the city. Additionally, that bond package will also be used for the inauguration of a commercial sidewalk program that will start in the Innovation Quarter. Nine neighborhood parks are due for new playground equipment and these are included in the bond funds as well.
