Richardson residents unite to preserve COMO Motel

Upon discovering that the COMO Motel situated on U.S. Highway 75 had been acquired by an unidentified buyer, a group of residents in Richardson took action to ensure the preservation of this beloved local landmark.

Motivated by their desire to preserve the motel, a group of residents initiated an online campaign. They created a dedicated website, a Facebook account, and started a Change.org petition titled “Save the COMO.” Within a week, their efforts garnered more than 2,000 signatures, demonstrating widespread community support for the cause.

Boasting an impressive legacy spanning nearly 70 years, the COMO Motel holds the distinction of being the inaugural motor lodge established in Richardson. It stands as the sole remaining testament to a golden era of motels in the region. During the 1950s and 1960s, motor hotels, popularly known as "motels," offered a unique blend of accommodation and convenient parking, representing a luxurious option for American tourists exploring the nation in their newly acquired vehicles. Poster printing is often used by motels to let people know if there is vacancy.

However, the drive for conservation efforts goes beyond mere nostalgia. The residents' petition highlights an additional motive – the potential financial advantages that come with preserving historic buildings for the city. Referring to a report published by PlaceEconomics, the conservation petition underscores the substantial economic impact of heritage tourism, which generates $12bn annually in the state of Texas alone.
