Richardson ISD is looking to make a few changes to the boundaries of its single-member districts.
This change will affect how five out of its seven board members are voted in. The changes will not have an effect on how the Single-Member District 3 election scheduled for 2023 will be held. Under the new system, five of the RISD’s board members will come from single-member districts and will be voted in by registered voters who live within the district’s boundaries. The other two seats will be taken by officials who are elected at large.
In the previous system, all of the board members are elected at large. This system was challenged in a lawsuit that claimed that the system did not allow for minorities to be represented equitably. Boundaries were redrawn for single-member districts so that there are two districts where most of the registered voters identify as minorities. New boundaries can be shared on official Letterheads.
One of the changes that the board is considering would see a neighborhood with 35 residents moved to District 5 from District 4. This will keep the residents from being inadvertently moved from single-member District 4 during the redistricting process that was okayed in 2021 and updated recently to include new data from the census.
Another change that was proposed includes eliminating sub-districts that do not have any residents in them. The community can provide feedback on these changes using the RISD’s Let’s Talk account.
