Richardson boasts award-winning growth in 2012

Business card printing will probably show a sharp uptick this year as developers move ahead on a variety of projects in Richardson and the surrounding area.

After earning the International Economic Development Council’s 2012 Gold Medal for leading mid-sized (25,000-100,000) U.S. cities in job growth and investment, Richardson will continue its high rate of development into 2013. Mayor Bob Townsend’s recent State of the City address highlighted some significant developments:

KDC, a Dallas-based developer, plans to invest $1.5bn in a 1.5 million square foot office complex next to the existing DART Bush Turnpike Station. State Farm Insurance’s office lease on the site is the largest in Dallas’ history, with other significant lease signings expected to follow in short order. New housing and designated healthcare services will also be included in the project.

Adjoining the KDC site, the Zale Corson Group has already begun first-phase construction of 800 luxury Class A apartments.

Methodist Health System is in the process of expanding its Renner Road campus to include a $120m acute-care facility. The new regional hospital will join the existing cancer center and outpatient facilities at Renner Road, while Methodist Health System’s Campbell Road site will be expanded to better serve the need for inpatient rehabilitation, geriatric, and long-term acute care.

The first Alamo Drafthouse Metroplex is scheduled to open in late spring. This expansion of the signature Austin movie theater will be located in Richardson Heights Shopping Center.

The recognition of Richardson’s Economic Development Partnership (REDP) by the International Economic Development Council as an Accredited Economic Development Organization puts the REDP in a select group: only 32 other organizations worldwide have earned the designation.
