Nursing school gets green light from council

Following unanimous approval from the City Plan Commission at a meeting held on March 7, Galen College of Nursing intends to proceed with its plan to establish its first nursing school in Richardson.

Medical City Healthcare will operate the school and the plan is to have its first nursing school in North Texas up and running by the summer. Constructing the campus will require the approval of the Richardson City Council at its Monday, March 27 meeting. Galen Vice President of Operations Kathleen Dwyer stated that the college is still on track to open in the latter part of the summer. Banner printing could be used to advertise an opening date in cases like this.

When explaining the reasons for picking this location, Dwyer commented:

“We were looking at the shortage we saw in this community alone and knew we needed to be here. There will be a shortage of over 13,000 registered nurses in the North and Central Texas area by 2025."

Galen College of Nursing's projected fourth campus in Texas will be in Richardson and is predicted to have a maximum capacity of 1,000 students. However, due to students being off-site for clinical rotations and online courses, only 300 students are anticipated to be present on campus at any given time, as mentioned by Dwyer. The 41,000-square-foot campus, located at 1301 W. President George Bush Highway, will have modern patient simulation labs and classrooms that will promote hands-on, experiential learning.
