Many other school districts have raised their starting salaries for teachers to over $60,000. Several districts even started recruiting earlier than usual in order to fill their vacancies ahead of competing districts. Garland ISD’s new salary for starting teachers is $60,000. The current teachers have also received raises, and new employees can expect to get signing bonuses as high as $1,000. Larry Glick, a Garland ISD Trustee, explained to Fox4news.com:
"It’s time to retain our great staff. And the way to do that is to reward them and to say we appreciate what you’re doing, we appreciate what you’ve been through and we’re going to try to get you to the point where you think we understand the suffering you’ve done."
New teachers starting their careers in Dallas are now getting salaries worth as much as $70,000, and the signing bonuses in Dallas and Fort Worth can be as high as $5,000.
