While casting their votes for two aspiring City Council candidates and a trustee for the Mansfield ISD, local voters will also have the opportunity to weigh in on two bond propositions put forth by the City of Mansfield.

Both propositions before the voters seek to broaden the scope of the half-cent sales tax collected by the Mansfield Economic Development Corp. These propositions do not involve the creation of any new taxes, as clarified by MEDC director Jason Moore. Rather, they aim to enable the MEDC to utilize the funds for a more diverse range of projects, expanding the potential uses of the collected revenue. Printing services can be used to create ballots.

In 1997, Mansfield voters granted approval for a half-cent sales tax, with an additional half-cent allocated to the Mansfield Park Facilities Development Corp.

If Proposition A is authorized, it would enable the Mansfield Economic Development Corp (MEDC) to utilize the half-cent sales tax for the purpose of attracting professionals and amateurs to use their athletic facilities. They will also be able to provide better tourism and convention facilities, entertainment facilities, and public parks. Some of the funds will go towards the development of associated parking, restaurants, stores, and transportation facilities.

Presently, the half-cent sales tax is designated for usage in manufacturing, distribution, industrial, warehouse, research and development, and the corporate headquarters. However, Proposition B seeks the approval of voters to expand the utilization of the half-cent sales tax for a multisport venue and associated infrastructure, as well as maintenance and operating costs.

Election day is this Saturday, May 6, with most of the early voting opportunities having passed.
