Council approves pay rise for officers

Police officers in Mansfield City are being thanked for their efforts with a pay rise.

The Mansfield City Council voted in favor of a 7.75% pay rise for supervisors and patrol officers, deliberating for around 35 minutes in private before coming to a unanimous decision. An early version of the year’s budget shows that the raise went into effect on March 1.

The media will not be able to get a copy of the contract until it has official been signed after the final vote on March 15. Such documents offer contain official Letterheads.

When asked why it was considered urgent enough to be an emergency vote, Mayor Tim Theaker responded that there was an immediate need to implement the changes. Keith Porch, Police Chief, said that it was due to the number of Mansfield officers switching to other departments offering higher pay.

Councilwoman Stephanie Zader stated:

“They are not concerned about specifics. They want to know that they are safe in their city. We need to incentivize officers to come here, to stay here and to want to serve here.”

The executive session also dealt with a vote on increasing the ranges of salary for the police chief and the assistant chief, and included a vote in favor of creating a new position – that of the risk manager/procurement officer.
