Sai Sai Ding is only 13 years old, but later this month, residents of Lewisville will get to hear the young cellist’s talent when he performs a solo with the Lewisville Lake Symphony.
Ding has taken home the top prize in musical competitions in places as far flung as the Ukraine, Moscow, and Beijing, as well as in spots a little closer to his home in Dallas. Moscow's Tchaikovsky Conservatory offered him a place, but he decided to move to Dallas, where he studies with cellist Ko Iwasaki.
The winner of the 2015 Young Artists Competition, Ding was given the Bill and Grace Lawrence Scholarship for $1,000. He will also be performing Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with the symphony. The organizers of the concert could use flyer printing to promote Ding's performance, as well as the other pieces on the program, which include Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and Overture to Creatures of Prometheus. The symphony's musical director, Adron Ming, will be conducting.
The Young Artists Competition was created by a former teacher, Vernell Gregg, in 1999 to recognize talented young musicians. It is open to students in grades 6 through 12.
The performance is scheduled for February 20 at the Lewisville Grand Theater, beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for students, and $20 for seniors and can be purchased online.
