Lewisville in full bloom this month

Two organizations in Lewisville are teaming up for the 24th annual Make a Difference Day, seeking to make the area a more beautiful and more sustainable place to live.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful and the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area are joining forces for the annual volunteer event. Volunteers in the area will be joining a host of others around the country for both Keep America Beautiful's Get Growing Day and National Make a Difference Day.

While in the past, the Keep Lewisville Beautiful group focused on planting daffodils, this year it has decided to do something a bit more in line with the spirit of habitat conservation, which is the specialty of the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area. Instead of planting non-native daffodils, the groups will plant native wildflowers and prairie grass this time, having switched to native plants in 2011.

Amy Wells, the executive director for Keep Lewisville Beautiful, told the Lewisville Leader that this is particularly exciting due to the specific nature of the North Texan plant life.

The groups could use flyer printing to recruit volunteers for the event. They are currently looking for people to plant the seeds, clear away invasive species, and help restore areas of the prairie. The volunteer event will take place rain or shine on October 11 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am, but will be rescheduled if there is lightning.
